The windy wind blows through the airport terminal in Sirocco, trapping passengers in its merciless grip. Some are forced to climb onto the roof of the control tower. One man tries to escape by flying over the airport in a small drone aircraft. The tragic character played by Sean Penn holds out hope that he will find his wife in China before she dies from cancer. When his efforts fail, he comes down to ground level and prepares for an intervention which turns into a bomb blast intended for himself and all of mankind when he starts dealing with terrorists. The director is James Keach, a native of Chicago, who has made a number of documentaries and television movies. The crew includes veteran actor Telly Savalas as his Italian partner and famed Italian cinematographer Carlo Di Palma. The music score was composed by Michael Small. In the end Penn turns out to be the only survivor after the explosions kill everyone except him....and he has no memory of who he was before arriving in Sirocco. The original screenplay for this movie came from a short story by Ernest Kao who was born in China, where he attended the University of Beijing and later Columbia University in New York City. He has published numerous articles and essays on Chinese literature, and worked as a translator and editor. He also won an Academy Award for his work on the screenplay for Chinese Box (1997), which starred Jeremy Irons and John Lone. The director James Keach happened to read the short story about five years before its publication in The New Yorker Magazine, and has been working with Kao ever since to bring it to screen as Sirocco...on location in southern Italy. Sirocco was filmed on location in China and on a sound stage in Italy. The aircraft featured in the movie include a Boeing 747, a DC8 and a Cessna Citation Jet. The DC8 aircraft, with its three jet engines is shown landing at the airport of Sirocco as if from around the world to escape from an impending "nuclear holocaust." It is also shown taking off from that same airport as if it were on some sort of mission as well as flying over the city before it crashes due to mechanical failure, probably caused by sabotage. The aircraft was actually a Cessna Citation Jet which was flown by the film's pilot and transported from Sicily to Italy aboard a Cargoliner executive jet charters flight. The film is in Italian with English subtitles."Sirocco" at the Internet Movie Database 1. James Keach - "Sirocco" "Webmasters.com" 2. IMDb- "Sirocco" "Internet Movie Database" 3.
