For more than one-hundred years, "progress has been measured by our ability to be able to do more and more with less and less." Theoretical physicist, futurist, inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee says that the next hundred years will be different. "It is time for us to look inwards towards ourselves." What does this inward focus mean for your company? This blog post outlines what's at stake if you put off exploring this question. If you are looking for a few business lessons from recent history, here are three takeaways about how technology can disrupt established industries...1) Musical Instrument Sales Decline as Computers Replace Band Instruments... In a recent article by The Atlantic, the author goes on how the world's most popular instrument – the acoustic guitar – is facing a serious decline. He blames it on digital technology – specifically, the rise of computer music. In this same article, he explains that sales of guitar-shaped electronic keyboards have shot up since 2001 with sales reaching 113 million units in 2010. So what happened to the sale of musical instruments over this time? Well, they dropped from around 4 billion in 2005 to 1. 4 billion in 2010. Lesson: Of course, the computer music isn't going away anytime soon – it's a brilliant technology that can make a lot of music sound better. However, it has the ability to push out other technologies as well as be disrupted by other innovations as well.2) Disruption of Traditional Model from Social Media... Over the past decade, social media has allowed us to communicate with one another in ways that we never thought possible before. It is now the most popular communication platform on Earth, with over 1 billion people using Facebook at least once each month. However, there are challenges for businesses that want to use social media. Many companies still aren't getting the full value out of their social networks. For example, many companies feel that they need to hire an army of interns to post pictures and engage in conversation with consumers on their behalf. So what do you do if you don't have time or resources to find and hire enough help? Or perhaps you decide to outsource the work... Lesson: Either way, it's not easy or cheap; but there is another way...3) Free Online Education Disrupts Traditional Teaching Methods... Since the introduction of YouTube in 2005, online education has taken off. In 2012 alone, the number of views on YouTube educational videos reached 250 million. Back when I was in school, when I needed help from a teacher, it wasn't easy to get it. If you were lucky, you had one or two teachers who were approachable and willing to give extra help... Today, the world is different. Instead of waiting for top learning moments to happen during class or after school, more than 1 billion people use YouTube for free education every month. Educators are developing new online courses that can be accessed anywhere in the world at any time on any device. cfa1e77820
